If you have Netflix and a brain you must watch Russian Doll. I would have watched this regardless, because I have been intrigued by Natasha Lyonne ever since she shot Slums of Beverly Hills back in 1998. But this…..is a powerful masterpiece. She plays a software engineer with an affection for drugs, a complex past, and a death wish. In it, she goes through what initially appears to be a Groundhog Day knock off. It becomes striking existential journey for her and someone similarly broken. I think that because I had some existential crises this year that it just wiped me out emotionally. In a way, it reminded me of Jacob’s Ladder, and touched me in a similar way. SEE IT. Oh, and by the way, see Jacob’s Ladder too!
